MSN Flash Drive: 2009 Land Rover LR2 HSE, Expert Review By: MSN Staff http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/review.aspx?year=2009&make=Land%20Rover&model=LR2&cp-documentid=1093863
The smallest vehicle offered by Land Rover in the U.S., the 2009 Land Rover LR2 HSE feels a little bit more at home on the pavement than most of its larger siblings. Thanks to the latest technology, it also still retains legendary Land Rover off-road capability. Sharing drivetrain components with the Volvo S80, the LR2 is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive but tends to feel more like a front-wheel-drive vehicle until the electronically controlled center differential kicks in to vary the torque split. The 230-horsepower 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine provides enough power on the highway and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission for combined fuel economy in the upper teens. Inside, the LR2 duplicates the luxurious but functional style of other Land Rover models. The LR2 is a luxurious, 5-passenger SUV that makes a great everyday driver, but retains all the off-road capability, including the adjustable Terrain Response system, which offers four modes to tailor the electronic aids for different off-road conditions. –Mike Meredith The LR2 is a finely crafted compact SUV. From the comfortable and attractive interior to the bold styling of the exterior, this is a cool little SUV. The smooth V6 engine provided 20 mpg in mixed driving, which is decent considering the 230-horsepower output. Inside the car, it was unusual to have the window and mirror controls near the driver's window, and it took awhile to get used to this placement. Also, the electrical system was fooled once because I removed the key fob without pressing it in first — the LR2 would not let me lock the car because it still thought the key was in the ignition. Maneuverability was good in the LR2 in the city, and with all the off-road capability built in, a family could rely upon this SUV to be the only vehicle in the household. –Joe Chulick The Land Rover LR2 may be the cheapest of the Land Rover family, but it is also my favorite. It is extremely well-suited to road driving. The engine may not deliver great fuel economy, but it is smooth and offers a torque curve that matches the urban jungle. And as bad as the fuel economy is, it's still the best among all the Land Rovers, which I suppose is proof that it doesn't matter to the typical buyer of these vehicles; instead, the legendary off-road ability and luxurious comfort entice a Land Rover owner. Here the LR2 does credit to its siblings, offering only slightly less luxury for a bunch less money. That's why the LR2 is my favorite. –Paul Hagger

NEWS RELEASE Gaydon, Warwickshire, 24 September 2009 – Land Rover has confirmed today that a production version of its exciting LRX concept car will be built. The new car will debut next year and join the Range Rover line-up in 2011. Designed and engineered at Land Rover's state of the art Gaydon facility, the new Range Rover will be the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced. The new car will be built at the multi award-winning plant in Halewood, on Merseyside, subject to quality and productivity agreements and will be sold in over 100 countries around the world. Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover said: “The production of a small Range Rover model is excellent news for our employees, dealers and customers. It is a demonstration of our commitment to investing for the future, to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers, with the outstanding breadth of capability for which we are world-renowned." "Feedback from our customer research also fully supports our belief that a production version of the LRX Concept would further raise the desirability of our brand and absolutely meet their expectations." Phil added. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said "The new vehicle will be a natural extension to the Range Rover line-up, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. It will be true to the concept and have many recognisable Range Rover design cues including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid 'wheel-at-each-corner' stance." The 2010 Range Rover might look the same, but there are so many changes under the skin that it's as if Land Rover jacked up the body and slid a new car underneath. The exterior changes are subtle. There's a new grille, new headlamps and a new front bumper. The styling changes have softened the car a wee bit, though it's still a gorgeous ute. The interior design stays roughly the same (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) but materials were upgraded--there's more leather, more wood, more of what Range Rover owners expect. The main dials have been replaced by a really cool TFT screen projecting virtual dials. Two new direct-injection 5.0-liter V8s are available, normally aspirated and supercharged, both Jaguar/Land Rover developed. The naturally aspirated engine produces 375 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque. That horsepower figure is just 25 hp less than the outgoing supercharged model. Meanwhile, the new supercharged version now cranks out 510 hp and 461 lb-ft. Both engines are mated to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission. The supercharged version will hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, more than a second quicker than before.
The suspension now includes what Land Rover claims is the world's first (in a production car) adaptive damping system that measures the road ahead of the vehicle and adjusts the suspension accordingly. There also are bigger brakes to stop the big beast better, and a new stability and roll-control system. It all works fantastically, we must say. Both new Rovers are quick--the normally aspirated model is almost as fast as the old supercharged model while the new supercharged model is a rocket ship. If anything, Land Rover's 5.9 second 0-to-60-mph claim seems conservative. The suspension changes and electronic gizmos make the new Rover almost flingable, considering its near 6,000-pound weight. Pushed into corners, the truck feels controlled and body roll is minimal (again, considering other huge utes). Out on the open road, it's smooth and serene. And, of course, the thing will go damn near anywhere. In Spain, we drove it over rocks, up rock walls, down hills, through mud--it took everything we could throw at it. The normally aspirated car will cost $79,525 while the supercharged car will set you back $95,125. Look for a fall debut. If you're in the market for a big SUV, start your search here.

Through three generations spanning over three decades, the Range Rover status as the complete and most capable luxury all-terrain SUV has never been seriously challenged. Two new engines with superior performance were introduced for the Range Rover line last year. The flagships supercharged and inters cooled DOHC 4.2-liter V-8 delivers 400 hp, a 35 percent gain over the previous V-8. The 420 lb-ft. of available torque provides effortless passing acceleration and quiet highway cruising. The Range Rover integrated monocoque body and chassis are fortified with three steel sub frames. The main body shell is galvanized on two sides with aluminum-alloy doors, front fenders, and hood to save weight. The instrument panel, climate control system, air bag layout, switchgear, and storage facilities are all newly designed to reflect the latest advancements in aesthetics, ergonomics, and technology.

We are proud to announce that we are becoming part of the worlds largest humanitarian organization! One of the makes for which we are a dealer, Land Rover, has been actively involved in humanitarian missions with two leading organizations: the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies! We consider ourselves being a dealership with a sense of pride. Land Rover has once again created the G4 Challenge 2008-2009 program to support the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. This is essentially a global sporting enterprise that helps raise funds for humanitarian causes. This competition involves the following criteria:
- a total of 18 national teams consisting of one male and one female member each
- Carried out over a period of 18 months to be held in Asia for the 2008/2009 cycle
- The event will be environment-friendly as well as completely carbon offset through Climate Care
The benefits of this challenge are that emission levels would be at amazing lows and thereby ensuring that the competition is going to be healthy in both the literal and figurative sense. In addition, the next two Challenges combined are estimated to help raise more than $2 million and Land Rover will donate a vehicle to the teams national Red Cross or Red Crescent National Society that wins the challenge.
Of course, such efforts are not new to this company; it has been involved in related activities since 1954.
